The Swiss stage director and actor Andreas Zimmermann was born into a „theatre<br />family“. His father was an internationally well known stage- and costume designer<br />and his mother an actress.<br />After his formation as an actor at the Conservatory of Frankfurt/Germany he had<br />contracts for several years in Germany and Switzerland. Besides he worked also for<br />television and performed in many TV-series and TV-movies in Germany, Switzerland<br />and Austria.<br />In his mid-30ies Andreas started to work as a directors assistant for opera. Out of<br />lifelong interest and admiration for the music theatre he wished that his experience as<br />an actor would be beneficial for opera productions. Ever since a detailed scenic<br />attention has been in the center of Andreas Zimmermann‘s work as a director.<br />He was lucky to learn the craftsmanship from famous directors such as Klaus M.<br />Grüber and Sven E. Bechtolf during his early years at the Opera House Zurich in<br />their productions of Idomeneo, the Da Ponte cycle and others.<br />In 2006 he was asked to direct a production of Falstaff with Cleveland Orchestra. In<br />2007 followed a direction of Szenen aus Goethes Faust (Robert Schumann) at the<br />Zurich Opera House. Hereinafter he directed the world-premieres Cadence<br />Macbeth in Austria, Figaro¿ and Gianni Schicchi + La Notte di un nevrastenico in<br />Switzerland, and Carmen at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna.<br />He also directed the drama play Romeo and Juliet in Switzerland.<br />Apart from his work as a director and actor Andreas Zimmermann is a regularly<br />demanded international revival-director and collaborator of well known directors such<br />as Robert Carsen, Damiano Michieletto and Pierre Audi; he re-stages regularly their<br />productions in different opera houses in the world (f.e. Il barbiere di Siviglia and I<br />Capuleti e i Montecchi at Paris National Opera, La Bohème from Salzburg Festival at<br />the Grand Theatre Shanghai, Tristan und Isolde at Dutch National Opera, Parsifal at<br />Bavarian State Opera/Munich, Hamlet and Cavalleria Rusticana/I Pagliacci at Opéra<br />La Monnaie Bruxelles.<br />With great pleasure Andreas Zimmermann is professor for acting at the Opéra<br />Department of the well known Music Academy La Chapelle Reine Elisabeth in<br />Belgium since 2021.
